Contest Allows Teens to Educate Teens on Texting Dangers
As texting among teenagers behind the wheel becomes more and more prevalent, lawmakers and activists often struggle to figure out the best way to inform teenagers of the danger of this social activity. As a Fresno car accident attorney, I think that teens are receptive to hearing about safety information given the right venue, but sometimes it’s hard to find that sweet spot that will get through.
Two national groups have lately taken a rather unique approach to the dilemma: they’re attempting to get teenagers to educate each other.
The National Road Safety Foundation and the American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Administration’s National Student Safety Program (NSSP) have teamed up to sponsor a contest called the JST DRV Radio PSA Contest, in which teens between the ages of 14 and 18 can submit their own radio PSAs on the subject. It’s youth-generated content for youth.
The winner of the 2nd annual contest will receive a trip to Wisconsin in July to take part in the NSSP’s national youth conference, but perhaps more importantly, the winning entry will be broadcast nationwide, both over the airwaves and online so that teenagers across the country can hear the message. Entries can be submitted starting on February 2nd.
A spokesperson for the National Road Safety Foundation said that traffic crashes are the number one cause of death among teens in the country, with the U.S. Secretary of Transportation calling distracted driving a national epidemic. This contest, the spokesperson continued, encourages teenagers to speak to other teenagers using their voice.
As a car accident attorney in Fresno, I know how socially connected today’s teenagers are. With so many devices at their disposal, it makes sense that these technologies would become a distraction, especially to drivers who are just becoming used to driving a car. It’s good to see a contest bring awareness to this issue in a unique way.
